It was cold, wet, and overcast all day yesterday, and on this morning’s walk we saw that the last few clouds were being swept away, leaving a powder blue sky behind.  Low on the southern horizon the delicate wisps of clouds looked intentionally placed, as if The Great Artist had decided that the canvas called [...]

A Car Wash Day

It’s a beautiful day today in New Albany. The sun is shining, the temperature is in the high 70s, and the sounds of lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and trimmers fill the sultry air.  My neighbors are hard at work, and I should be, too. It’s a perfect day to wash your car — so I [...]

We got down into the 20s overnight, and when the dogs and I took our walk this morning there was a heavy frost on the ground.  As we walked the sun rose, making the frost-covered fairways looked like sheets of pewter streaked with the melting rays of sunshine.

If you thought the movie Twister was an exaggeration, think again.  Dallas was hit by a huge storm earlier this week, and the footage of a tornado ripping through a truck stop and tossing trailers into the air like playing cards is pretty amazing stuff. My sister Cathy has always been terrified of tornadoes.  Looking [...]

With the recent unseasonably warm temperatures, the daffodils are the Homestead are out in full, and the flowering trees also have burst out. It’s such a pleasure to see Nature’s bright spring colors through eyes that have grown so accustomed to the monochromatic winter world.  The vivid yellows not only brighten the landscape, they also [...]

When the dogs and I left for our walk this morning, the tell-tale signs were visible to anyone who cared to look and let their inner teenager roam free. A few stray gray cardboard tubes, of the kind we associate with only one product, were on the side of the street, where they clearly had [...]

Last night a powerful series of thunderstorms rolled through central Ohio.  It was the first major thunderstorm of the season, and coming as it did in the black early morning hours it was a spectacular show. I first heard the storm when it was well off to the west.  I had our windows open to [...]

I woke up this morning and discovered that I had magically been transported to San Diego.  The day was warm, the sky was clear, and cars topped with surfboards packed the highways. Well, okay, maybe not the last part . . . but it was another fabulous day in Columbus, Ohio today.  The New Albany [...]

Today we had an absolutely flawless afternoon in Columbus.  The temperature touched the low 70s, the sunshine was dazzling, and everywhere you could feel the spring fever.  Penny and Kasey had it on our walk this evening — and so did I.  The blissful expression on Kasey’s face as she happily rolled in the green [...]

Today was a beautiful day in Ohio.  The sky was bright, the sun shone down with friendly rays, and it was unseasonably warm.  Looking longingly out the window from the conference room of an office building, I was reminded of grade school and those fabulous days when you convinced your teacher to hold class outside. [...]

It’s cold and blustery up here, with snow squalls rolling through.  Ohio’s Great Lake reflects the weather.  It’s been whipped into a lather of waves by a gusty wind that slaps and tears at all it touches — be it human faces, clothing, trees, or the swing set that creaks on the shoreline.  You can [...]

One final point about snow — it makes you appreciate roundness. As the snow falls, it covers the sharp edges and blunts the pointed corners.  The world becomes a smoother, more rotund place.  Plumpness is accentuated, and is oddly pleasing. The black asphalt walking path around the Yantis Loop is like a dark canvas waiting for the artistic touch of snowflakes.  Typically the snowfall will simply drop a white blanket that covers everything, but in some spots, where trees catch a few flakes, the path will look like a monochromatic, negative image of a drip [...]

Snow inevitably find a place to land, and when it does it leaves everyday objects limned in white.  Often the white highlighting reveals delicate beauty that is just waiting to be appreciated by an attentive passerby. I like the gentle arcs the snowfall traced on these pine tree branches, leaving them looking like outstretched arms [...]

The falling snow covers the individual needles and leaves of plants and bushes.  In the process, it brings out broad, previously unnoticed outlines and patterns and leaves them etched sharply against the plant’s dark backdrop.  In the case of this evergreen shrub, the result looked oddly like chicken feet. World Of Black And White
