IMG_3705I’ve always refrained from planting flowers until after Mothers’ Day because my mother told me that is what you should do.  This year, that piece of folk wisdom turned out to be wise, indeed, because the overnight temperature on Mothers’ Day dipped below freezing and left a significant layer of frost on the ground and on the boardwalk.  I’m not sure it would have been enough to kill or damage delicate summer flowers, but because I held off on planting I don’t have to worry about it.

Sometimes old sayings are worth crediting.  After our frosty Mothers’ Day experience, I’m now totally resolved not to jump off a cliff just because all of my friends do so.

IMG_1209The flowering trees in our neighborhood are beautiful, but they are losing their petals with every gentle gust of spring breeze.  Be careful as you walk and talk — you might end up with a mouthful.

IMG_3470This afternoon the temperature came close to 60 on a bright, sunny day.  We barely dare think it, much less say it:  but could Spring finally have Sprung?

A would-be angler at the number 5 pond apparently thought so, but his casting hit a snag or two among the buds on the tree limbs overhanging the boardwalk.  He’ll have plenty of time to work on his technique in the coming months.

IMG_3464Yesterday Kish and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary, and to mark the occasion I got her some flowers.  Kish loves long-stemmed red roses and heather, so of course the choice of an appropriate floral arrangement was easy — but the Wayside Flower Shoppe here in New Albany, Ohio added a few extras to make the bouquet even more special.  Good job, folks!

Why is it that seemingly every flower establishment uses the olde English spelling of “shop,” by the way?  It’s not as if the English invented flower arranging.  And could people really associate beautiful floral displays with the muck and mire and Black Plague that characterized medieval Europe?

IMG_3379Culverts are the pipes or concrete drains that allow streams and creeks to flow under roads.  They’re commonplace, and we tend to ignore them — or, at least, I do.  I’ve walked past this culvert hundreds of times, but this morning I decided to take a closer look.  It’s a pretty basic culvert, but I liked the sound of the rushing water . . . and I realized I’ve never been on the other side.

I think every ten-degree increment has its own, distinctive personality.

IMG_3354The teens are cruel, and the 20s are unforgiving.  The 30s are bone-chilling, and the 40s are gloomy.  The 50s are hopeful, and the 60s . . . well, the 60s are joyful.  When the 60s come after a long winter, giving us an early — albeit brief — taste of the spring to come, the effect is magical.

We took a leisurely afternoon stroll today as the thermometer hit the 60s, and it was as if a sleuth of bears had awoken after a long, cold winter of hibernation.  People were out jogging, riding their bikes, and skateboarding in the unfamiliar sunshine.  People clad in shorts were washing their cars, with the radio playing in the background.  And children’s toys had been removed from basements and garages and put outside where they belong, to add some color and fun and shouts to the suburban milieu.

The 60s will be gone tomorrow, as our temperature once again plunges downward.  But I sure enjoyed today’s brief glimpse of warm weather.

IMG_3341Two hopeful signs of spring this weekend:  this morning I saw that the swans have returned to our New Albany pond, and tomorrow morning at 2 a.m. we will all “spring ahead” into Daylight Savings Time.

With the swans dunking their heads and long necks into pond water that was frozen only a few days ago, and sunshine that will last well into the evening, can spring be far behind?  Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead tomorrow!

IMG_3234Those evil meteorologists are saying that another big winter storm is bearing down on Columbus, ready to drop multiple inches of snow and prolong winter for a city that is oh-so-ready for spring.  Just when we get a welcome glimpse of grass, it’s to be covered up again by another icy white blanket.

And so, on our evening walk, I look to the west and see the clouds low on the horizon.  Is that the leading edge of the storm?  Only time will tell.

IMG_3131The interplay of snowy boardwalk planks, the fences to the right and the left, the footprints of an earlier walker and his dog, and the shadows left by the Sun’s warming rays made for a pretty scene on this morning’s trek.

Hoggy’s Barn and Grille has closed.  For years it’s been a mainstay of the neighborhood, holding down the corner of Route 62 and Morse Road on the Gahanna-New Albany border.  Now the restaurant is shuttered.

IMG_1138It’s always sad when a neighborhood joint goes down the tubes — particularly one that’s been operating for years.  We’ve been to Hoggy’s dozens of times, eating family dinners, chowing down on pulled pork and ribs and beef brisket, enjoying the mashed spuds with the skin on and macaroni and cheese and moist cornbread, washed down with a good beer or two.  We’ve had some laughs and good meals and dared members of our family to take a shot at the “Hoggy’s Challenge” eating contest.  I don’t think anyone ever did.

After the kids went away to college, Kish and I stopped going to Hoggy’s; it just wasn’t the same.  Apparently other people stopped going, too, because Hoggy’s parent company has gone into receivership, and the receiver has said that the restaurants were dogged by poor sales.  The big white barn at the corner of Route 62 and Morse is now closed, and who knows when — or even if — it will ever open again.

IMG_3035We had some high winds when our latest winter storm rolled through town.  They knocked down twigs and small branches from the trees in our neighborhood, and the fallen debris was then partially covered with snow.  The resulting effect is unlike the standard, pristine blanket of snow we typically see.  Instead, our neighbor’s yard looks like the head of a balding man, with a few stray hairs marring the otherwise barren scalp.

This morning in New Albany the temperature is 10 degrees Fahrenheit, coupled with a 21 mph wind.  That means we’ve got a wind chill factor of -15 degrees, and a severe weather alert on the iPhone weather app.

Those are just numbers, however.  People who live in warmer climates may wonder:  what does it mean when the wind chill factor is 15 below zero?

It means that when you walk outside, your eyes water from the intense cold and the tears freeze to your cheeks.

It means that you walk with your head angled downward, hoping that the top of your head will cut into the breeze like the prow of a ship.

It means that everything in your nose freezes, leaving your nostrils clogged with sharp little bricks and nuggets, while at the same time your sinuses drain and fill your mouth with a sludgy, slimy, ever-replenishing reservoir of phlegm.

It means that every inch of exposed skin feels scoured and brittle and inflamed and raw, all at the same time.

It means that your neighbors should be especially appreciative of your resolve to pick up dog poop, because when you remove your glove to do the dirty deed you are ensuring that the hand will remain stiff with cold until you get back inside.

It’s not a pretty picture.  But it also means that, when you finally do escape the cold, and feel the tingle in your cheeks and ears as the warmth returns, you are grateful for a working furnace, and that hot cup of freshly brewed coffee tastes awfully good.

IMG_2997We’ve just come from a week of exceptionally cold temperatures, which followed a few days of unseasonably warm weather.  This morning it was bracing on our walk, with the temperature in the teens and a brisk wind skirling over the snow and dropping the wind chill into “don’t take your gloves off under any circumstances” territory.  According to the weather app on my iPhone, however, the temperature is supposed to be 61 on Tuesday and 55 on Wednesday — and then it will plummet back down to a high of 19 on Friday.  Good luck deciding what kind of coat to wear this week!

I don’t mind cold weather, and I don’t mind warm weather, either.  I just wish Mother Nature would make up her mind!

IMG_2803It’s very cold here this morning, with the temperature in the teens as dawn is breaking.  That kind of cold tends to keep people indoors, so when Penny, Kasey, and I took our morning walk we saw no one else out on the path.  As we trudged along on our solitary journey, I was struck by these footprints in the snow, looking as if they were heading toward the sunrise in search of some warmth.

IMG_2752It’s cold here, but the recent snowfalls have outlined everything in white, creating many pretty scenes on our morning walk.  It’s amazing how a few inches of snow can make the world that you see every day look different — like this curving gate to one of the neighborhoods here in the New Albany.
