It’s been a mild winter — but a wet one. The waterways in our neighborhood are full to the banks, and during our recent walks Penny and I have often heard the rush of water. Rose Run, which zigzags in close proximity to old State Route 161, is typical of the creeks and streams in [...]

Zen, And Driving To Cleveland On A Rainy Thursday Morning

I left our house at 6:30 a.m. The sky was bleak, clouds masked the moon and stars, and it was raining steadily. Street lights shone on rain-slick roads as I navigated I-270 and then took the I-71 North off-ramp. From there, it is a straight shot to Cleveland. The rain beat on the roof of [...]
The Republican Campaign Rolls Into The Buckeye State

On March 6, the Ohio Republican primary will be held. Today, when I was driving to and from Cleveland — more on that later — I heard the first radio ads of the primary season, which means that the vote cannot be far away. Today a Rasmussen poll reported that Rick Santorum has a big [...]

The 2010 Census cost Ohio two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. That loss of seats made drawing the new congressional map a challenge — and also produced one of the more intriguing primary elections that Ohio will see this year. The primary pits two long-time Democratic Representatives, Dennis Kucinich and Marcy Kaptur, against [...]

One final point about snow — it makes you appreciate roundness. As the snow falls, it covers the sharp edges and blunts the pointed corners. The world becomes a smoother, more rotund place. Plumpness is accentuated, and is oddly pleasing. World Of Black And White World Of Black And White (II) World Of Black And [...]

The black asphalt walking path around the Yantis Loop is like a dark canvas waiting for the artistic touch of snowflakes. Typically the snowfall will simply drop a white blanket that covers everything, but in some spots, where trees catch a few flakes, the path will look like a monochromatic, negative image of a drip [...]

Snow inevitably find a place to land, and when it does it leaves everyday objects limned in white. Often the white highlighting reveals delicate beauty that is just waiting to be appreciated by an attentive passerby. I like the gentle arcs the snowfall traced on these pine tree branches, leaving them looking like outstretched arms [...]

The falling snow covers the individual needles and leaves of plants and bushes. In the process, it brings out broad, previously unnoticed outlines and patterns and leaves them etched sharply against the plant’s dark backdrop. In the case of this evergreen shrub, the result looked oddly like chicken feet. World Of Black And White

During an Ohio winter, when the snow falls and the temperature plummets and clouds fill the sky, everything seems drained of color and stripped down to black and white. I like it when that happens because you suddenly notice things about the structure of the world around you that, perhaps, you didn’t fully appreciate when [...]
The State Of The State In Steubenville

Today Ohio Governor John Kasich gave the State of the State speech. He broke with years of precedent and gave the address at a school in Steubenville, Ohio. Amazingly, Kasich got ripped for deciding to give the speech away from Columbus. Some groups said it was a waste of time and money. One liberal “think [...]
Considering Ohio’s Highway Speed Limit
Posted in Ohio, tagged Driving, Highways, Ohio, Speed Limits on February 5, 2012 | 1 Comment »
Ohio legislators are once again considering whether the speed limit on Ohio’s interstate freeways should be increased. The issue is whether to raise the speed limit from the current 65 m.p.h. to 70 m.p.h. The Ohio Highway Patrol would prefer that the speed limit stay at 65; it contends that higher speeds result in more [...]

Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has accepted a new job. He will be moving to Akron and taking a position at the University of Akron — not as a football coach, but as the Vice President for Strategic Engagement. I’m happy for Mr. Tressel (although I will always think of him as Coach [...]
Hoping To See A Snowy Owl

I’m not a birder. New Albany doesn’t seem like a great place for bird-watching. We share this space with the native Ohio birds, ducks and swans, and the flocks of dreaded, honking, crapping Canadian geese — but not much else. But now my bird-sighting hopes are up, because there are reports that Snowy Owls have [...]
An Update On “Occupy Columbus”

Yesterday was a beautiful, spring-like day, so after lunch The Bus-Riding Conservative and I decided to take an extended walk. To our surprise, when we walked past the Ohio Statehouse we learned that “Occupy Columbus” is still there. To be sure, the tents have moved since I last visited Statehouse Square months ago. They used [...]
The Blizzard Of ’78 At Ohio State

I was reminded today of the Great Blizzard of 1978. It was a devastating Storm of the Century, but I remember it fondly — and, I suspect, other Ohio State students of that era do as well. The Great Blizzard struck on January 26 and 27, 1978. It blanketed Ohio with huge amounts of snow, [...]
