After losing a brusing contest against Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament championship game, Ohio State will head to the NCAA East Region as a number 2 seed.  The Buckeyes will play Thursday against Loyola (Maryland).

Before we get too wrapped up in March Madness, I hope all Ohio State fans take a moment to recognize what a fine season the Buckeyes had.  The team beat Duke and Florida early in the season, played in the toughest conference in the country, overcame some mid-season struggles, and won its last two regular season games to win a share of the Big Ten regular season title.  Winning the Big Ten regular season title is an accomplishment worth savoring, and Coach Thad Matta is making it seem routine.  What a fabulous hire he has been!  The Buckeyes then played two excellent games in the Big Ten Tournament before falling to the Spartans in a classic, physical slugfest.  Congratulations to Michigan State for winning a very tough game between two evenly matched teams.

Now that we’ve taken a moment to appreciate the season so far, let’s turn to the Big Dance.  I don’t want to hear any whining from Ohio State fans about being put in the toughest regional, or drawing unfavorable match-ups, or having to deal with different styles of officiating.  If you want to be a champion, you need to suck it up and find a way to overcome the obstacles in your path.  The last week of the regular season and the Big Ten Tournament suggested that Ohio State may be starting to gel as a very good team.  We’ll find out soon enough — starting Thursday, against the Loyola Greyhounds — whether this year’s version of the Buckeyes is made of championship stuff.

My name is Penny.

What’s with this new member of the pack?

She’s not even housebroken.  I’m not kidding!  I walk around the house during the day, and find her accidents.  It’s embarrassing to any self-respecting dog.

I’m hoping Kasey gets with the program here.  Otherwise, the old boring guy is always going to be in a grumpy mood.  That’s not good for Kasey, or for me!

And another thing.  Kasey has a pretty good nose on her.  She can sniff out lots of interesting smells.  When I catch up, I always enjoy them, too.  But then she is off to do something else after only one good whiff.  She doesn’t fully explore the nuances of the odors.  She obviously doesn’t have an educated sense of smell, either.  That’s sad, too.

Hey Kasey: take time to stop and smell the roses!  Or the interesting territorial markings left left by another dog, as the case may be.

Here’s another sure sign that spring is near:  the swans are back on the pond next to the green on number 5 North.  Yesterday, on a brilliantly sunny day, the magnificent birds were drifting regally on the water, nibbling on the plants at the water’s edge and adding a bit of class to the neighborhood.

Yesterday I was going through the checkout line at Kroger when the disturbingly exuberant checkout lady piped:  “Remember to ‘spring ahead’ tonight!”

I understand that Daylight Savings Time requires us to adjust our clocks twice, at what seem to be increasingly random and ever changing points during the year.  Obviously, it’s something you need to be aware of, so you don’t show up an hour late for an important meeting on Monday morning.  But is it really something to be so darned chipper about?

My guess is that the people who gaily remind everyone to “spring ahead” are the same people who like being called “peppy.”  They probably were on the high school cheer squad and student council, voluntarily sat in the front row and then talked to the teacher after class, kept a detailed “secret diary,” and talked incessantly to their friends about their “pet peeves.”

Have you ever noticed that no random people you encounter during the day remind you to “fall back”?  That’s because the Chipper Brigade loathes the idea of spending an extra hour in bed and doesn’t want to dwell on it.  On the other hand, the “fall back” people aren’t going to bother you — they figure you’ll figure it out eventually, and in the meantime they just want to get some more sleep.
