Recently I heard someone say something along the lines of “If So and So thinks he can come waltzing in here and do that . . . ” and it made me wonder why waltzing gets singled out in that way. The context always makes it seem like the person in question has a bad ‘tude and an insufferable superiority complex. I’m not sure that I associate those qualities with Arthur Murray graduates, who seem like polite and humble folks. Seriously, is it because the waltz is a more intricate dance, and therefore people who can waltz seem superior to the left-footed masses? Why isn’t it sambaing, or twisting, or Charlestoning, or pulsing, or jitterbugging?
